Cost, productivity and flexibility are keys
for successful implementation of laser welding in production.
Conventional laser welding is performed with a fixed optic
attached to a robot or gantry. However, much time is lost to
move the optics from one weld to another and weld lines are
limited to smooth 3D curved lines. Remote welding enables very
short positioning times and a wide variety of weld patterns, but
is limited to 2.5 D weld lines and requires lasers with
excellent beam quality. Robotic remote welding combines the
benefits of both technologies and results in optimum flexibility
and productivity at lowest costs.

Validation
and Prototyping

The BW42D-contour is a newly designed prototype
of a modular-built production system for laser welding of
Tailored Blanks. This system is fully automatic for medium or
high volume production with fast change-over between different
products. Its revolutionary and flexible character is based in
particular on the integrated in-line edge preparation unit that
makes reliable laser welding possible, even for non-linear
contours. The system incorporates newly developed technology
into a state of the art machine tool.
