Job Description for Project Engineer – Optics & Laser

Position: Project Engineer – Optics

Date of Issue:  August 6, 2007

Tentative Starting Date: October 1, 2007

Employment Location:    Fraunhofer USA, Center for Laser Technology
                                    Plymouth, MI 48170

This person will work as a project engineer in the area of optical design and assembly of customized optical systems, focused on beam shaping and fiber coupling of diode lasers.  The responsibilities will be to conduct research work in the respective field to include experimental verification of the theoretical results and building of prototypes as well as equipping the laboratory with the proper machinery.  This person will also support the Center in its endeavor to acquire new contracts in the field and will serve as a single point of contact for customers.

The work will be focused on developing fiber coupled diode lasers, fiber laser components, and customized laser processing optics.  This includes optical modeling and design, thermal analysis of components and systems, set-up of test systems, characterization and optimization of performance and building of prototypes, as well as the design and specification of required tooling.  The fiber coupled diode lasers to be developed are based on single chip laser and the work to be performed includes optically and thermally optimized 2D arrangements, micro-lensing for collimation, optical systems for rearranging the beam and macro-optics for fiber coupling.

Basic technologies and production relevant issues need to be investigated and solved and prototypes must be built that can handle the high power density reliably.  The technology must than be transferred to production.

The candidate is expected to work efficiently in a small team setting.  The candidate should be capable of planning and conducting experiments and summarizing the findings in conclusive reports.  Technical presentation and support for customer acquisition in the respective industries will also be included.

About 5 years of experience in the field of optical modeling, laboratory set-ups and building of optical prototypes are required.  Experience with diode lasers in general and specifically with micro-lensing of diode lasers is necessary.  Experience in thermal modeling is also desirable.  At least a masters degree in engineering is required.

  News:

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) awarded CLT a grant to develop a low cost diode laser of unprecedented performance.  This technology will be transferred to a Michigan based laser manufacturer while opening up new applications for the laser in automotive manufacturing and in the homeland security markets.  In addition, the MEDC awarded two other grants to CLT.   One grant was for laser processing technologies for the packaging and assembly of alternative energy sources and storage devices, such as high capacity batteries and fuel cells.  The other grant involves joining of dissimilar materials which is of particular importance to the fields of optoelectronic and micro-electromechanical (MEMS) and bio-MEMS devices which are used extensively in the telecommunication and medical implant/device industries.
